If you walk the whole way through the Rockland (Woodhill) tunnel, there is a remote leg of the Allegheny River Trail that doesn’t get many visitors. The tunnel is roughly 1/2 mile and is very dark so bring a flashlight. It will take some time to walk, and you probably don’t want to run your cell battery down, so I strongly recommend a purpose-made flashlight.

Start on the left near Freedom Falls

Most people who do walk through the tunnel turn around at the end and walk back.

It was a beautiful fall day and the leaves had just started to change, and some fall.

The river flanks the right side of the trail, and a steep hill lines the left.

Other than the river, there isn’t much to see other than a few remnants of the trail’s railroad past.

If you keep walking, you will eventually pass mile marker 101, and after 1.8 miles from the parking lot, you will be at the next access point here.

If your in the area, your not far at all from Freedom Falls, Check it out!
